What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is where the macula is slowly destroyed, greatly impacting the person's quality of vision. There is no cure, but plenty of treatments are available to slow down the progression of AMD.

Causes of Macular Degeneration

As the name implies, macular degeneration is a disease that affects people as they age. You have a higher chance of getting AMD if you have the following factors:

  • Smoke
  • High blood pressure
  • Caucasian
  • Light-colored eyes
  • Already have AMD in one eye
  • Heart disease
  • Spend too much time out in the sun

There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry AMD. About 85 to 90% of people with macular degeneration have the dry form. Dry AMD is when yellow deposits called drusen accumulates around the macula. Having some hard drusen in your eye is normal because it part of the aging process. However, if you have soft drusen in the center of your eye, then it is related to dry AMD. Some patients with dry AMD may develop the wet form over time.

Wet macular degeneration rapidly deteriorates vision than dry AMD. It occurs when extra or abnormal blood vessels develop under the macula of the eye. Damage happens when these blood vessels leak blood and other liquids into the eye.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

If macular degeneration is not treated or detected right away, your central vision will begin to fail, or you may become blind. At first, you may not notice vision changes. As the disease progresses, your vision will become blurred. Symptoms of macular degeneration include having distorted vision, not being able to see straight lines, dark, blurry areas appearing in the center of your vision, and color perception changes. If you display any of these symptoms, contact our eye clinic right away.
